Recently the UK government has discovered a very pressing problem
LONDON, Sept 2 (Reuters) - Britain's government has said it will investigate how prices for concert tickets sold on official websites are hiked when demand surges, after fans seeking their spot at next year's Oasis reunion shows faced soaring costs over the weekend.
Culture minister Lisa Nandy said it was "depressing to see vastly inflated prices" on sites operated by authorised retailers which she said would exclude some fans from the shows.
I'm sure it's all very sad for Oasis fans; why this has become a UK governement priority boggles the mind. Oasis tickets are very firmly in the category of luxury good (perhaps even a Veblen good – i.e. a good for which demand increases as price increases).
If the government truly believes that Oasis tickets are something people have a right to then I think it's only fair that every person in Britain be given the right to see Oasis, and as such I have a modest proposal
- the core problem is that there are M people who want to see Oasis, and only N Oasis tickets available where M is much bigger than N.
- unless M decreases or N increases some people will always be unhappy, irregardless of the system of rationing used
- it's pretty hard to decrease M and the methods to do so generally seem objectionable to people; therefore we should increase N
- the UK government should therefore clearly legislate to force Oasis to provide as many performances as there are people in Britain willing to attend them
